Wrath of the Lich King session six: The Assault on Utgarde Pinnacle

When we last left the party, they had defeated the tyrannical duo Svala Sorrowgrave and Skadi the Ruthless, along with the Ingvar the executioner, clearing both their names and Jarl Ulrah's via trial by combat.

###

Utgarde Keep (continued)

However! After a brief cheer, silence flew over the crowd as their attention drew to the King's seat - where an unarmored undead body lay.

(For a bunch here, I played a youtube mix of the army of the dead music by Ramin Djwadi)

Panic ensued, and without skipping a beat, the undead guards went out of control attacking Vrykul citizens and guards. The guards fought back against the undead while the others rushed for the exits.

Ulrah turned to the five of them, and said “I must go to the Pinnacle. If the King is dead, or in danger, we must ensure the Four Pillars are safe. If they fall, we will surely fall to the Lich King’s reign. He allowed us to keep them intact, but now he may come for them if he believes we will break loose. They are what he’s wanted all along, and if this chaos persists--”

As they gathered the gear they won in a rush, a thundering sound came from the distance beyond the platform - hundreds of undead came over the hill, charging toward the Vrykul Keep!

Ulrah urged them further as they continued to scramble to put on the dead lieutenants' gear... “I sent a sending to your camp for their presence, but now there’s no time! We must go! There’s only one way out, and it’s up!”

Now surrounded by undead aside from through the keep, they agreed to go! So they headed for the gate into the keep, rather than the field of undead. Before the dead arrived, they were engaged by the soldiers of Unity point! Horde and alliance slashed through them, with a bright light at its front carving through. (Oh hai Tirion)

Running through the keep, they ascended through caverns and stairs up and up. Down one of the caverns, they, along with the large group of Vrykul evacuating with them. were charged by a throng of skeletons! It was a quick combat that lasted one round, against 8 slightly advanced skeletons. Easy peasy!

---Narrative time!---

"Clearing a path, you reach a hall with a peculiar light to it, with an open area in the distance. Walking through, you feel your body separate from your mind, and you feel a strange force jolt you up and forward causing you to nearly fall before catching yourself.

Utgarde Pinnacle

A wind much colder than on the executioner’s platform touches your face, and as you open your eyes, you see yourself in a courtyard miles into the sky atop Utgarde mountain. Beyond a field of ice and snow lies intricately built stone spire reaching to the sky with a melee between undead and Vrykul ensues. The other Jarls run through the portal behind you, and Ulrah joins with them. Running toward the mass at the entrance, severely injured Vrykul guards are fighting off a band of frost-covered wights. A bunch of them turn their cold gaze toward you, and charge to attack!"

---

They fought four frost wights here. A little more dangerous than the skeletons, since they could inflict negative levels and did more damage (extra cold damage too!) Luckily, no one got a negative level from this.

The wights rolled pretty badly for initiative, so the party ripped through pretty quick.

As they battled the frost wights, the Vrykul around them fought others off-map - Algriff carved runes into the ground, causing the skeletons to writhe in agony, while jorg used kicks and sweeping combos to keep them at bay. He learned how to use Runecarver abilities since they last met!

--- (Narrative!)---

(Played the part of the mix for Hardhome part 1)

"Finishing the undead out front, you see the mass of soldiers from unity point along with Tirion at the helm with a large number of vrykul behind them come through the portal from Utgarde Keep. The Jarls urge you to leave the others and come with them.

As the unified forces reach the centre of the massive mountaintop platform, masses of undead crawl over the side of the mountain like hundreds of starving spiders coming for prey. A massive shadow swirls through the sky and around the courtyard, smashing the ground behind the forces far from you - and Arthas appears himself with the frosted runeblade Frostmourne in-hand decorated in his black armor.

(Wanted to play this voice line when he landed, but it didn't work right away so I cancelled it. RIP)

Tirion immediately engages him, and yells “Get to the peak, we’ll hold them off! Ensure the pillars are safe!”

Running up the spire, you pass the bodies of multiple Vrykul, covered in gashes and bites from the undead that are also lying upon the stairs. Emerging onto one of the floors, you see four massive wights that are the size of giants, with pasty white skin and blue light in the pits where eyes used to be.

(They had combat with four brute wights here, modified to be like frost wights)

Running to the top of the spire’s stairs, your exhaustion comes to a halt as you arrive to a shattered doorway. A massive wooden door that once held the sacred royal chambers is broken and splintered, and passing through, the room is now filled with skeletons that rush toward you. Swirling with mace, blade, and claw, the group of you smash through the throng of undead to clear the room.

Looking around, the chamber is coated with sunlight of the mountain peak coming through the stained glass above, depicting several Vrykul legends of battle and contact with the titans themselves. Four circular platforms surround the centre, standing three feet off the ground. Ten feet above it, the pillar seems to continue to the ceiling, with a bright ring of light connecting the four in a circle.

At the back of the room, a massive Vrykul lay within an incorporeal shell, sleeping soundly; By his stag helm and dragon-headed shoulderplates, you recognize him as King Ymiron."

---

At this point, I started playing "Against all odds" from the mix and set a timer for 1 minute and 10 seconds so it could get to a sweet part at the perfect time for my narrative.

---

“The king...is alive? What happened to him?” Algriff says.

“It’s too late, there’s no time,” Ulrah pleads you. “Outsiders. We must protect the pillars. If we do not keep them, the Lich king will claim them now that he knows his hold on this land has weakened. You must guard us! If he is able to claim the power, he will only grow stronger.”

Looking up, you notice the sun begin to fade from bright to a lulling grey.

Without an answer, she moves to help the elderly Algriff up onto one of the platforms then jumps on one herself, with Sigurd and Jorg jumping onto the other two. Kneeling, Sigurd says, “Funny we’d give outsiders this chance.” (He was the Jarl from the Blood pillar, so not a big fan of outsiders)

Jorg laughs. “Shut it, momma’s boy. You’re more of a meatbag than they are.”

Sigurd’s closes his eyes and grumbles to himself. Jorg simply looks at you with a sly smirk. Algriff simply nods, and says “We’ll help you all we can.”

Lastly, Ulrah looks up before turning to stone, seeing a dark shadow envelop the stained glass above. A dark phantom comes through the glass, swirling around the pillars and down,, down and all around you. A light travels up the Jarl's bodies to their faces, turning them all to stone where they kneel. Ulrah closes her eyes before the shade lands, simply saying, “The majority of his power remains below, don’t be fooled.” A wall of light surrounds each of them, completing the pillars with a wall of light. When they complete light flows out from each of them, forming a shining aura around you.

(This is when the music got to this part)

The shade hits the ground before the doorway, and grows from a shadow on the ground to a humanoid form, clearing into the dark armor of one you would only recognize as the Lich King.

His deep, resounding voice echoes throughout the royal chamber. “Seems the giants have become traitorous; such a shame their pillars are nothing without their king to defend them--simply minions are left.” Drawing his jagged, icy blade frostmourne, he points it toward you, saying, “Surrender them. Leave now, and I’ll let you live.”

---short narrative break---

Of course, Fish said "No way, sucka, I'mma kill you." Classic. However, the Lich king replied with "Exactly what I wanted to hear."

You see his form shift and alter, as three copies of himself swirl out and surround you. They look close to identical, though one has shadows shifting around him making it difficult to see, another has a frosted wind swirling around him, and a final has a black staff with spiritual skulls swirling around it.

---

If they surrendered, he would have laughed, and said “Cowards, then. Pathetic.” And started combat anyways.

This was a very experimental battle thing I wanted to try. It's sort of the like the final boss of Black Rook Hold in the world of warcraft - a super powerful enemy, and a helpful spirit grants them a huge buff to help fight the enemy.

Each 'pillar' granted them a huge buff according to the type it was.

From the Pillar of Strength: they gained a +10 sacred bonus to strength and dexterity scores, and their weapon enhancement bonuses increased to +5.

From the Pillar of Blood: they gained a +10 sacred bonus to their constitution score, and +5 armor class.

From the Pillar of Lore: they gained a +10 sacred bonus to their intelligence and wisdom score, and have +4 to caster level (not class level).

From the Pillar of Community: they gained a +10 sacred bonus to their charisma score,  +4 to attack as well as +2d6 precision damage while flanking (or while dealing precision damage by some other means), and aid another bonuses were doubled.

In total: (All were temporary sacred bonuses)
+10 to each ability score
+5 armor class
+5 weapon enhancement bonuses
+4 attack/+2d6 damage while flanking
+2 to aid another actions

This battle was exciting for that reason, and the fact that each of the forms of the Lich King's shade were similar in statistics (health, AC, attack, weapon damage, etc.) but possessed the abilities from a different class.

They were all deathfrostshadowshadowdeathdeathsuperdeath classes (abyssal knight, frost death knight, death priest, and shadow knight) but they all have very different class concepts. I'll be posting them periodically!

I had thought to have all four use the same initiative, but I thought having different initiative would be more interesting.

The fight began, with the players surrounded on all sides by four shades of the Lich King's power.

A few different battle themes here. Some were the undead theme from above, I also used "The Maker's ruin (Ultima weapon phase one), and Ultima (Ultima weapon phase two) from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, as well as Birth of a Wish from NieR: Automata.

Right away, the shadow knight used dash and slash, which allowed him to hit four people at once due to his angle on the party. He also critically hit two people as well! Strong (and scary) start.

Solessa drank her black ox brew and moved up to attack the shadow one.

Fish shot at the original Lich king, the abyssal knight, doing a ridiculous 78 damage and getting a critical hit with his revolver! (They do 4x damage). Also, since they hadn't gone yet, he got sneak attack damage (+2d6 from the pillar). That made him an early target.

That turn he both had destruction cast on him by the death priest (Which would have killed him if Fish had not rolled a 24 on the dot for his save) and the Abyssal knight used fearsome sword which paralyzed fish after a failed save. Better to be paralyzed than dead!

The frost death knight Lich king had remorseless winter up constantly, and moved to use obliterate as well, trying to kill Solessa and Rosalia, since they were dealing devastating punches and casting high damaging flame strikes.

After the death priest casted destruction, it made that one an instant focus for the party. Another plan was to use antilife shell first turn, but Fish made himself readily dangerous, and was goading the enemy the whole time. Immediately, Magnus, Soren, and Killer Queen (one of Rosalia's animal companions) homed in on them and just tore the death priest apart with high rolls and ridiculous damage. (And a critical hit from a well-enchanted, greyflame-using dervish named Magnus)

The shadow knight dealt a lot of damage through a couple of attacks, but lost his total concealment from his shadowguard ability though a glitterdust spell, which made him a rather easy target to hit, even when he was able to deal so much damage using transfer of darkness. I kind of forgot he panicked enemies on hit with that, but the one he hit would more than likely have saved. Never know, though.

Fish was indeed paralyzed, but he got a save every round and made it the next one! He sat out one because it's a full round to save and be free, but the next round he started shooting again and took down the shadow knight. The abyssal knight, however, moved around him into the middle of all the players, and used the final ability abyssal knights can get, doom of the living, which chooses one ability score to deal 1d4 drain to for all within 30 ft., granting him those score points for 10 rounds. He chose constitution, which didn't necessarily affect his score re: undead, but he still healed from it.

After some more devastating cold attacks from the death knight and shadow knight, they were taken down by some powerful attacks from each player, and were taken down! With the last strike, the Lich king growled, "This...isn't...over."

There were a number of critical hits, constant damage, and debilitating abilities from the Lich King's shades, but the players handled them well and kept them in check. Good work, team!

(Switched to "Garden of the Gods" from the Chrono Cross soundtrack)

The light returned to the royal chamber, and the Pillars faded along with the bonuses, and the Jarls stepped down. The sound of fighting faded from beyond the spire, and some Vrykul appeared in the doorway, along with Tirion who stayed in the background for now.

###

Algiff dispelled the undeath ward on the King, and Ulrah removed the sleeping curse he had on him.

King Ymiron awoke, and told the players + Jarls what happened - the King went down to find Jarl Ulman, Ulrah's father as he had been waiting to discuss the matter of separating from the Lich King's rule as a neutral group.

Ymiron discovered him murdered by Svala and Skadi. Being found out, they cursed the King into a sleep so that they couldn't be trifled with - and judging by the Lich King's reaction when they were slain, was that Svala and Skadi did what they did to stop that from happening - fearing if they separated, the Lich King would come for the pillars and kill them all. A very likely outcome, had our heroes not been present...

The Jarls also told the King that the players had been seeking support from the Vrykul, or at least, to have a stable peace between the two. Each Jarl gave their testament to the party and the people of unity point:

Jarl Sigurd had no knowledge of them, as they hadn't interacted with him or the city of Guomarsh.

Jarl Algriff stated they had returned the ancient knowledge of the runecarvers to him and all of Cragmire - which allows them to bolster their ability to resist the Lich King if he decides to come after them once more.

Jarl Ulrah spoke of their support for clearing her name (though it may have been also due to their own dislike for the lieutenants), as well as their aid in the battle that just occurred.

Jarl Jorg Spoke well of their raw strength, and while the King usually does prefer to test people himself, Jorg said the little ice-man (Magnus) challenged him directly and bested him in single combat, which gained great respect from him.

With those testaments, King Ymiron chose to support Unity point and break free of the Lich King's rule, and gave them free roam of the Vrykul lands and the borders.

---

The Jarls informed the party that three of the pillars that they felt specifically connected to the characters would grant them a gift - but each player could only choose one of the pillars of Community (Ulrah's), Strength (Jorg's), or Lore (Algriff's).

Magnus chose Lore, for both a bit of story information about his character's unknown past and purpose, along with 2 additional uses of enchantments per day (the 'extra enchantments' feat) for the Dervish class.

Soren chose strength, which granted him the improved critical: scythe feat.

Fish chose strength as well, granting him the deadly aim feat, which he really wanted for awhile.

Rosalia chose Lore - which gave her a choice to change her connection to Azeroth, to either bond with the land itself, or the elements. Otherwise known as, she could class change to shaman, or geomancer. She chose geomancer! No more pack lord druid, but geomancers are an interesting class I'm excited to see in action.

Lastly, Solessa chose community, which granted her 2 additional brews per day, and allowed her to learn to make one additional brew from the brewmaster class - and some knowledge of what she sought in Northrend.

I really liked the idea of a reward for a difficult battle (and the end of an area) being an ability, or a feat, rather than just loot. It seemed more appropriate for what happened, as well!

In addition, they achieved level 9!

The Next Decision

After a few days, the situation at Utgarde mountain had calmed, things were being rebuilt, and meetings with the different Jarls and members of Unity Point had taken place. Tirion asked for a meeting with the party, and thanked them for their incredible help in both helping the Vrykul Kingdom, and helping make peace with the new arrivals to Northrend.

However, he stated that several of the teams sent out to Dragonblight, Zul'drak, and the Grizzly Hills sent sendings to him requesting aid. They could travel to these areas and provide aid, if they wished to.

This is the information they were given.

Grizzly Hills

The region north of here is filled with forests, and home to the failed world tree, Vordrassil. A team of ours went to make peace with Grizzlemaw, the city of Furbolgs that reside there. The team leader sent us a message seven days ago noting the hostility of the Furbolg tribes, two in particular - Redfangs and Frostpaws - who fight over the main city of grizzlemaw. Baergar Blackpaw is the chieftain of the Frostpaw Tribe, and Bloodmaw One-eye is the leader of the Redfang Tribe.

Originally it was said the Furbolgs were peaceful, especially among one another - so this is concerning. he stated that a sickness has struck them that he cannot remove by magical means, nor does is spread like a disease does. They requested a few more be sent in order to investigate. Zigg Windstriker is the name of the team leader, stating they had made an outpost north of Grizzlemaw.

Dragonblight

Dragonblight is a vast frigid wasteland, and is home to multiple civilizations. It is the resting place of throngs of draconic races, with bones scattered throughout the region both on the surface and within the ice. Dragons, old and ailing, all go there to die, setting aside their differences in their final days. That is how the Lich King raised multiple dragons into his army.

Wyrmrest temple is where many of the Dragonflights meet and deal with one another. The team leader of that region noted a conflict between the red and blue Dragonflights. Multiple undead camps populate the eastern region, and a vast desolate region on the west end. It is also home to one of the Lich King’s old bases of operations, which is a massive sky-locked temple named naxxramas, but has been abandoned since the allied forces stormed it one year ago. The Tuskarr in Moa’ki Harbor, the tauren in Icemist village and near Wintergrasp, and several other human native towns that have been long forgotten, also remain there.

The Order of Sisters was sent to seek out the region, as they were proficient in dealing with the Dragonflights, and had previous contact with them before. From what the messages said, the oldest of the Order of Sisters, Raota Lightfeather, has stated that most of the representatives of the Dragonflights are not present, and missing - and the sister split into four pairs in order to search for the others and find out where they were. each was to split into pairs and go to the region they thought they were best fit to deal with, to see what life remained, and to see if they could bring others to aid their cause, and return within twenty days. However,  Raota and her paired sister, Miranda Sunfarer, were the only ones to return.

As of now, they reside waiting in Wyrmrest Temple.

Zul'Drak

Zul’Drak is a region controlled by the Drakkari ice trolls, a race of Zandalari that are present in Northrend particularly the Frost King Malakk. One of the horde lieutenants here, Zanarr, left with some of the soldiers to help investigate the situation there. From what he’s told Tirion, the Drakkari have gone mad, but he has not been able to investigate why - aside from the fact that they are not controlled by the scourge.

###

Rosalia is bent on going to the Grizzly Hills, as the spirits in Mistward Forest told her that's where her sister resides. Soren and Magnus have decided to separate from the party and go to Dragonblight to find Brann Bronzebeard (or at least to the next crumb to find him), and Magnus searches for Dahlia, a person who protected him in his past that knows the truth about his ancestry.

The players who are Soren and Magnus are making new characters, allowing their current characters to venture off for now. Fish and Rosalia push onward to the Grizzly Hills, to discover the sickness of the Furbolgs, as well as the truth of why Roselia's sister sought that region out.

Solessa ventures off on her own to a location in Northrend only told to Tirion, and in a note she leaves Soren and Magnus...

###

I hope you enjoyed reading about the first region of the campaign! It was lots of fun to make, and there were some neat classes and concepts that I got to test out. More new races and classes to come, including the ones chosen by the three that are swapping! (Two full character, one a class-swap)

An interesting thought:

Were Skadi and Svala evil characters? Hard to tell - they were simply doing what they felt was best for their people to survive.

Thanks for reading! Have a lovely day, and stay awesome!
